Angular Momentum in Quantum Mechanics
We begin with a review of the basic concepts involved in the quantum mechanical description of physical systems and the notation we will use in the lectures. The notes in this Section are not intended to provide an introductory course on Quantum Mechanics. They assume the reader has had at least a first course at undergraduate physics level that covers some historical background and reviews the...
متن کاملFrom Relativistic Mechanics towards Relativistic Statistical Mechanics
Till now, kinetic theory and statistical mechanics of either free or interacting point particles were well defined only in non-relativistic inertial frames in the absence of the long-range inertial forces present in accelerated frames. As shown in the introductory review at the relativistic level, only a relativistic kinetic theory of “world-lines” in inertial frames was known till recently due...
متن کاملSemiclassical matrix-mechanics. II. Angular momentum operators
Semiclassical angular momentum matrices are calculated using a new contourintegral formula for matrix-elements WKB sphencal harrnonic functions are found to be exactly orthonormal with the contour-integral inner-product Matnx-elements obtained from these wavefunctions are accurate to about 2 9b and the matrices obey the cornrnutation relations expected of quantum angular momentum operators The ...
متن کاملRelativistic Statistical Mechanics vs. Relativistic Thermodynamics
Based on a covariant theory of equilibrium Thermodynamics, a Statistical Relativistic Mechanics is developed for the non-interacting case. Relativistic Thermodynamics and Jüttner Relativistic Distribution Function in a moving frame are obtained by using this covariant theory. A proposal for a Relativistic Statistical Mechanics is exposed for the interacting case.
متن کاملRelativistic theory of particles with arbitrary intrinsic angular momentum ( ∗ )
As is well known, Dirac’s theory of the electron makes use of a four-component wave function. When slow movements are considered, two of the components acquire negligible values, while the remaining two, at least in a first approximation, satisfy the Schrödinger equation. In a similar fashion, a particle having intrinsic angular momentum s h 2π (s = 0, 12 , 1, 3 2 , . . .) is described in quant...
